Old tires left in a yard, behind a garage or beside a shed may look like a simple cleanup problem. During the rainy season, however, they can collect water and become mosquito-breeding sites.

Pasco County is waiving the residential disposal fee through November 1. Residents may bring up to four old tires at no cost, as long as each tire is no more than 36 inches in diameter. The program comes as the county responds to a local dengue-related emergency.

The program is intended for tires that are no longer being used and have been stored on residential property. A tire that is still in use does not need to be discarded. The concern is with old tires left outdoors, where even a small amount of rainwater can remain for days.

Tires must be taken separately from other waste. Rims may remain attached.

For Wesley Chapel residents, the closest location among the county’s listed sites is in Land O’ Lakes.

Where to take them:

• East Pasco Transfer Station — 9626 Handcart Road, Dade City. Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. • West Pasco Resource Recovery — 14606 Hays Road, Spring Hill.
