Nighttime work will affect right lanes at the intersection through Thursday morning, while a daytime turn-lane closure remains scheduled through Friday. Right turns onto northbound Bruce B. Downs Boulevard will still be available.

Drivers using one of Wesley Chapel's busiest intersections should allow extra time this week as resurfacing work continues at State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.

The Florida Department of Transportation has scheduled right-lane closures on both roads during overnight hours, along with a separate daytime closure of the SR 56 right-turn lane leading to northbound Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. The intersection will remain open, and FDOT has not announced a full road closure or a detour for this work.

What will be closed

Three traffic impacts are listed for the week of October 25 through October 31:

  • SR 56 at Bruce B. Downs Boulevard: the right lane is scheduled to close Sunday, October 25, through Thursday, October 29, from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. each night.
  • Bruce B. Downs Boulevard approaching and passing through SR 56: the right lane is scheduled to close during the same overnight period, Sunday through Thursday, from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
  • SR 56 right-turn lane to northbound Bruce B. Downs Boulevard: the dedicated turn lane is scheduled to close Monday, October 26, through Friday, October 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Right turns will remain available from the right through lane.

The overnight and daytime restrictions are separate. During the daytime turn-lane closure, drivers may still turn right from the adjacent right through lane.

When delays are most likely

The overnight closures overlap with late-evening traffic and continue into the morning commute. The daytime turn-lane work covers most of the business day. Drivers approaching the intersection should expect merging near work zones and watch for temporary signs, channelizing devices and crews.

The most important practical detail is that the dedicated right-turn lane from SR 56 to northbound Bruce B. Downs Boulevard will be unavailable during the daytime work window, but the turn itself will not be prohibited. Vehicles will make the turn from the right through lane, as directed by the work-zone setup.

Motorists who regularly use the intersection may want to leave a few minutes earlier, particularly during the morning commute, school travel periods and the evening shopping rush. FDOT's closure listings describe lane restrictions, not a closure of access to nearby businesses.

Part of a larger resurfacing project

The closures are part of a combined $19.8 million resurfacing contract covering 7.3 miles of SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.

On SR 56, the project extends from just west of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to east of Meadow Pointe Boulevard. On Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, the work extends from SR 56 to just south of SR 54/Wesley Chapel Boulevard.

The work is intended to preserve the pavement and extend its service life. It also includes safety improvements at the SR 56/Bruce B. Downs intersection, ADA upgrades, minor drainage work, traffic-signal improvements and overhead lighting.

Near Meadow Pointe Boulevard, the project will adjust the merge area and roadway transitions to create two 12-foot lanes designed to accommodate additional left-turn movements at SR 56.

Construction began August 24. FDOT lists Preferred Materials, Inc. as the contractor and estimates completion in fall 2027.

What drivers should do

Drivers should reduce speed, avoid last-second lane changes and follow temporary traffic-control signs when approaching the intersection. Because the work involves both nighttime and daytime restrictions, checking the current FDOT closure page before traveling can help prevent surprises.
