WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — October 18, 2026 — When a child with a disability faces school discipline, parents may find themselves navigating unfamiliar policies, educational plans and questions about their child's rights. Pasco County Schools is offering two virtual Parent Engagement Network sessions on Tuesday, October 20, from 5:30 to 6:25 p.m. for families of students with disabilities.
Two Sessions, Two Important Conversations
The first session, 5:30–5:55 p.m., covers the Code of Conduct, discipline procedures for students with disabilities and complaint procedures. The second, 6–6:25 p.m., addresses threat management, law-enforcement procedures involving students with disabilities and complaint procedures. Both are online. The district describes these as opportunities to address parent-identified needs, not announcements of new policies.
Why Discipline May Require Additional Consideration
Students protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or Section 504 may have specific rights when disciplinary actions are considered. Under IDEA, certain disciplinary removals can trigger additional procedures, including examination of whether behavior relates to a student's disability. Requirements vary with the circumstances; parents should consult their child's team or a qualified adviser about individual situations. Section 504 protects eligible students against disability discrimination in federally funded schools.
IEP and Section 504 Are Not the Same
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) documents specialized instruction, goals and services for an eligible student under IDEA. A Section 504 Plan generally documents accommodations and supports needed for an eligible student to access education. Some children may qualify for Section 504 protections but not for an IEP. Knowing the distinction helps parents prepare for school meetings and advocate effectively.
When School Safety Questions Arise
The second session includes threat-management and law-enforcement procedures. Safety responses can raise questions about how concerns are evaluated, who participates and how disability-related needs are considered. The meeting gives families a starting point for learning district processes; it is not individualized legal advice.
A Network Designed for Families
Pasco County Schools describes its Parent Engagement Network for Students with Disabilities as bringing together parents, teachers, administrators, community representatives and stakeholders to share information, discuss concerns and provide input. Parents with individual questions can also contact their child's school to ask about available Student Support Specialists and Exceptional Student Education resources.
How to Join
Both sessions will use Microsoft Teams. The district's official Parent Engagement Network page lists the separate links and participation information. Parents may wish to prepare questions beforehand; each session is about 25 minutes. Families needing accessibility assistance should consult the district's instructions or contact organizers.
