WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — October 21, 2026
The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners approved a five-year helicopter air ambulance services agreement with Med-Trans Corporation on Tuesday, October 20.
The partnership combines Med-Trans aviation operations with Pasco County Fire Rescue medical staffing. Med-Trans will provide and operate the helicopter, including aircraft ownership, maintenance, fuel and aviation operations. Pasco County Fire Rescue will supply a paramedic, and Med-Trans will reimburse the county for covered paramedic staffing costs.
The approval took place at the West Pasco Government Center in New Port Richey and applies to the county's emergency medical response system, including the Wesley Chapel area.
How the Partnership Works
Med-Trans is responsible for the aircraft and aviation operations. Pasco County Fire Rescue is responsible for supplying a paramedic for the air ambulance operation.
This arrangement combines specialized aviation capabilities with county emergency medical personnel without requiring Pasco County to own and operate its own helicopter.
What Commissioners Approved
The October 20 agenda described the arrangement as a five-year Master Helicopter Air Ambulance Services Agreement and branded air ambulance partnership between Med-Trans Corporation and Pasco County.
The agenda identifies a reimbursable amount of $3.56 million. That figure relates to the agreement's reimbursement structure. It should not be interpreted as the purchase price of a helicopter or as a direct county payment to acquire an aircraft.
Med-Trans will reimburse Pasco County for covered paramedic staffing costs.
Why It Matters for Wesley Chapel
Wesley Chapel is part of a growing region whose residents depend on emergency medical services across neighborhoods, commercial areas and major transportation corridors.
In some emergencies, patients need specialized hospital care. Helicopter transportation may be useful when medical responders determine that air transport is appropriate for the patient's condition and destination, including severe trauma and other time-sensitive emergencies.
The partnership does not mean every serious emergency in Wesley Chapel will receive a helicopter response. Dispatch and transport decisions depend on medical need, operating conditions, aircraft availability, weather and other factors.
The agreement also does not establish a guaranteed response time for any Wesley Chapel neighborhood.
Will Response Times Improve?
The purpose of air medical transportation is to support emergency response when patients need timely access to specialized treatment. However, the October 20 approval does not establish how much time will be saved locally.
Results will depend on the incident location, dispatch procedures, aircraft availability, weather and the receiving hospital. No specific response-time reduction should be assumed.
What Residents Should Do
Call 911 immediately during a life-threatening medical emergency. Dispatchers and responding medical professionals determine which resources are appropriate.
Residents should not attempt to arrange helicopter transportation directly. Air transport is one part of the emergency response system and does not replace initial assessment or on-scene care.
Questions about insurance, patient billing or possible air ambulance charges should be directed to the insurer or service provider. The county's staffing reimbursement agreement does not determine an individual patient's financial responsibility.
What Happens Next
The approval establishes a five-year framework for cooperation between Pasco County and Med-Trans. The next stage involves implementing the arrangement and coordinating it with existing emergency response resources.
