WESLEY CHAPEL AREA, FL — October 16, 2026. A major new chapter in cancer research is taking shape near Wesley Chapel, where Moffitt Cancer Center is expanding scientific operations at its Speros campus in Land O' Lakes.

The Moffitt Discovery and Innovation Center, a 250,000-square-foot research facility, is expected to accommodate approximately 250 research personnel and 20 faculty laboratories by the end of 2026, according to Moffitt. These are projections, not confirmed staffing totals.

What Is the Discovery and Innovation Center?

The facility is part of Speros, Moffitt's 775-acre life sciences campus in Pasco County. While the campus includes outpatient cancer care, this center focuses on scientific research.

Researchers will investigate how tumors develop, how cancers respond to treatments and how new technologies might advance therapies. Moffitt has identified cancer biology, drug discovery, chemistry, bioengineering and cancer metabolism among the disciplines expected to work there.

Bringing specialized teams into the same facility can make it easier to share instruments, knowledge and technical resources.

Moving Research Is More Than Moving Offices

Moffitt has described the complex process of relocating specialized laboratory instruments, chemicals and biological research samples into the new center.

Many scientific instruments require controlled conditions or recalibration, and biological samples can represent years of work. Planning moves around experiments helps scientists reduce disruption while creating an environment for future collaborations.

The process is an important scientific undertaking beyond the construction of the building itself.

What Research Will Take Place There?

Cancer biology researchers study how tumors develop and interact with tissue. Drug discovery teams investigate compounds that might lead to new therapies. Bioengineering specialists apply engineering techniques to biological questions, while cancer metabolism researchers study how tumors obtain and use energy.

These fields can reinforce one another: biological discoveries might identify promising therapeutic targets, while new engineering tools help scientists explore how those targets function.

A new research facility does not, by itself, guarantee immediate treatment breakthroughs. Scientific advances require testing, validation and, where applicable, clinical trials and regulatory review.

Research and Patient Care on the Same Campus

Speros is being developed around a vision that joins scientific discovery, cancer treatment and biotechnology.

The separate Moffitt Speros Outpatient Center, which celebrated its grand opening in January 2026, began treating patients later that month. It offers cancer-related outpatient services closer to Pasco County communities.

The Discovery and Innovation Center complements that work by providing laboratories and technical infrastructure for research.

What Does This Mean for Wesley Chapel's Economy?

Scientists are only one part of a research center's workforce. Laboratories rely on equipment technicians, maintenance specialists, laboratory staff, facility managers and administrators.

Moffitt has described a larger strategy to attract biotechnology partnerships and specialized health services to the Speros campus. That could help diversify Pasco County's economy beyond housing, retail and conventional service industries.

Benefits will depend on how the campus develops and how many jobs materialize. Projections of 250 research personnel should not be reported as 250 newly filled positions.

A Long-Term Investment

Speros is a long-term campus intended to support medical innovation, patient care, research and partnerships. Its impact will unfold over years, rather than all at once.

For nearby families, specialized medical care is already becoming more accessible through the outpatient center. The research facility may broaden the region's scientific and professional ecosystem as it ramps up operations.

When residents talk about local growth, roads, houses and shopping centers often dominate the conversation. Speros represents another kind of investment: infrastructure for scientific work that could eventually benefit patients well beyond Florida.
